Super foods in spoons and bowls

Superfoods are fruits, vegetables, seaweed or plants that have superior nutritional and body benefits over other foods.

What is a “Superfood” ?

A “Superfood” is described as “a food rich in nutrients, considered particularly beneficial in terms of health and well-being”.

Their nutritional values and their protective qualities against certain diseases are exceptional.

Superfoods are High on the ORAC scale

ORAC, which stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, measures foods’ ability to scavenge free radicals, and are more commonly called “Antioxidants”.

Free radicals are unstable molecules presents within us that can cause damage to our body at the cellular level.

The damage to the cell is caused by free radicals which have been implicated in the development of several diseases and disorders, including macular degeneration, cardiovascular disease, thrombosis, asthma, impairment of the immune system, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Antioxidants and Superfoods

Superfoods contain large amounts of polyphenols, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.

Their role as natural antioxidants is attracting more and more interest in the prevention and treatment of cancer, inflammatory, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases.

They are also enormously used as additives in the products of the agro-alimentary, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Many of the highly nutrient dense foods (Superfoods) are common and can be easily added to your daily nutrition plan, while other are more exotic, but certainly worth the trouble to be eat.

Do not forget that these are in no way some “miracle” food, capable of saving us from diseases. The basis to have a good health is simply to eat healthy and to exercise!
